Visiting Spiggie Beach, Shetland in search for seals

Spiggie Beach was a place recommended to me for seals seeing and there really were a few of them. Shetland is a place were one can see seals nearly everywhere, but somehow my few first days i couldn't spot any. It may have been the weather or something else but I didn't have any luck.

Goldcrest (Regulus regulus)

Goldcrest (Regulus regulus), one of the smallest birds living in Europe which luckily I spotted on side of the road.

Sturnus vulgaris zetlandicus - Shetland Starling

The Shetland starling (Sturnus vulgaris zetlandicus) is a subspecies of the Common Starling, which lives on the Shetland islands. The difference is that it is slightly darker and bigger then the continental subspecies.

It doesn't look darker on the photo but all of them were like that, so I assume that this is how one of them should look.

Sailing boats in Lerwick, Shetland

Spotted a sailing boat in Lerwick, Shetland. Next to her was another viking-styled one, which looks like the ones used in the January's celebration.

Visit to the Grutness' beach

This is the other beach opposite to the one from yesterday and this is technically facing the North Sea, which is interesting because the other is few hundred metres away and faces the Atlantic Ocean.

Shetland ponies

I spotted couple of the semi-legendary Shetland ponies. These animals are somewhat strange by the horse's standards, but nonetheless very cute and interesting. I'd get myself one if opportunity arises.

Waking up in Sumburgh surrounded by sheeps

So happened that we woke up with sheeps all around :)

Visit to the beach between Sumburgh and Scatness, Shetland

I went for a swim at this lovely beach, but the water was a bit too cool, so it didn't last long.

First impressions of Shetland

Some short videos from my first day in Shetland. It was one very windy day, so most of the time will very difficult to hear anything, but that is what it was. Otherwise Shetland is beautiful place with very strange nature without any trees. Everything is covered with grass and animals like ships, cattle and Shetland ponies feeding on it. I'll do more videos on that topic, but for now some first impressions from the day.

With car through Scotland

I took these few pictures, while crossing Scotland with a car. The whole exercise was to travel from London to Aberdeen, where I'd get on the ferry to Lerwick, Shetland. Even thought I haven't seen much from Scotland the little I managed to spot was enough to convince me that it is indeed one of the more beautiful places around. It has distinct spirit and it feels different of England.
